The crystals mentioned in
Fabula Nova Crystallis titles also
have a strong bearing on how the game progresses. Initially, there is
an
invasion of Cocoon by beings from Pulse, which leads to
quasi-revolution.
Cocoon, as its name suggest, ahs developed something of haven for the
ills of
FFXIII’s universe, leaving those outside in a dangerous environment.
Crystals formed
cocoon, but it seems that cocoon’s strength as a fortress are
susceptible to infiltration
and, more alarmingly for its inhabitants, the prospect that cocoon
could be dislodge
from its position above the orbit of Pulse. Although SE has stated that
the
various games from Fabula Nova Crystalllis FFXIII are not directly
related to
each other, they do all occur in the same universe and share aesthetic
seminaries.
FF Agito
XIII is the mobile phone title in the series. It seems to play
completely
differently from FFXIII proper, taking the universe in an online
direction that
facilitates multiplayer adventuring (although online features, as
Toriyama
explained, are still being consider for FFXIII as well). Tetsuya
Nomura, Agito’s
art designer also working as character designer on FFXIII.
Interestingly, while
the PS3 games have shown no signs of resurrecting old Final Fantasy
characters,
Agito does feature the series’ popular moogle characters.
FF Versus
XIII is the other Ps3-based Final Fantasy game currently in the works.
Versus
is another separate proposition, with more of an action adventure bent
than central
FF XIII PRG under MT’s direction. In fact, Tetsuya Nomura is Versus’s
lead art
designer, which explains the visual synergy between the three titles.
Versus is
all about the control of the mysterious crystals that tie the Fabula
Nova
Crystallis together. In this case, an heir to an kingdom is entrusted
with the
task of protecting a city’s crystals from invaders, although further
details
about this main playable character remain a secret.
What is known is that the game will make
innovative use of the SIXAXIS’s motion-sensing capabilities during
fighting
sequences and there will be playable characters other than central heir
hero.
The sheer
scope of SE ambition with FFXIII and its offshoots is really
impressive. It’s
safe to say that without the storage capacity of Blue-ray, FF XIII is
its PS3
guises simply couldn’t be done. Toriyama recently told Japanese
magazine
Dengeki that, “Final Fantasy XIII takes up the challenge of seeing how
the
battle from Advent Children can be recreated in a game. Battle
stat were not possible top resent in previous FF games were showing FF
VII
Advent Children. On the other hand, FF XIII will show how well that
movie can
be represented in a game.”
If SE gets
anywhere near giving us a playable game with the beauty of Advent
Children. We’ll
be very happy games indeed.
